The aftermath of Hurricane Mitch along with the continued regional flooding has left many associates lacking the basic necessities for survival.  Educational institutions suffered along with the rest of the communities and lacked the materials to properly educate the schoolchildren.

WE CARE IN ACTION

What (item listing): School supplies: 2,394 books, 2,000 rulers & 2,000 pencils

Who was it distributed to:  Students via local Education Directors

Total Expenditure: $15,800

To help fill the void left by the aforementioned disasters, We Care worked with the local Education Directors to identify specific areas to be of assistance for the children of these families. One basic need identified is school supplies that are not otherwise provided by the system, including items such as colored pencils, rulers, dictionaries and storybooks.

We Care committed to donate funding for these supplies for the children in the Honduran and Guatemalan farms' school systems for the 2000 school year.

Scholarships Total Expenditure: $8,000

For the school year 2000/2001 We Care working with the Tela Railroad Education Department funded 8 scholarships for workers’ children who, without this help would not have been able to finish their schooling.

IMPACT

Through providing schools supplies, We Care can help ensure that despite disaster the next generations of Guatemala and Honduras’ Chiquita community have the tools to further their education.  Basic supplies assist the teachers and students advance their studies and build a foundation for future success.
