[Hurricane Mitch] [Costa Rica and Panama Flood] [Hurricane Katrina] [Guatemala Flood 2005]
In January 2005, torrential rains on the
Atlantic coast of Costa Rica and Panama caused the worst floods in more than
35 years in these countries. In addition to damaging public infrastructure
such as bridges, roads, hospitals, houses and farms, these floods destroyed
most of the household possessions of many of the 5,000 Chiquita employees
and their family members in the region.

WE CARE IN ACTION
Company
employees helped evacuate people to safety and delivered food, water and other
emergency supplies by helicopter to the impacted people – in many cases, even
before national relief agencies. The Chiquita Relief Fund – We Care responded by
providing new household items, such as mattresses, kitchen utensils and stoves,
to the flood victims to help them get back on their feet.

IMPACT
Co-workers from around the globe responded rapidly and generously provided
contributions of $35,000 to help offset some
of these costs. Additionally, the
Chiquita Brands International Foundation made a special donation to We Care of
$300,000 to
assist in this recovery and to allow We Care to continue to have
relief funds readily available for future needs.
