[Educational Assistance – School Construction] [Educational Assistance - School Supplies and Scholarships] [Health] [Economics]

Countries Affected: Guatemala & Honduras
Chiquita Communities Affected:
Cobigua & Tela Division
Total Expenditure
: $97,069

The Guatemalan division and its communities were severely affected by Hurricane Mitch and continue to face seasonal flooding
and other developmental challenges.  As education is a key foundation for a community’s growth and health, We Care enrolled
to fund the construction of an education center in our community in Guatemala.

What (item listing):  Construction of primary/middle school
Who was it distributed to:
Guatemala worker’s community
Total Expenditure:
$77,069

Funding was approved to build a school in the worker owned housing community.  Migration to the area as a result of Mitch has overwhelmed the current facilities, requiring larger space and enhanced equipment.

When the construction was completed, an opening ceremony was hosted by Chiquita representatives Buck Keiser, Bob Kistinger,
Mario Mena, and Manuel Rodriguez.  Guatemala’s President cut the ceremonial ribbon and inaugurated the school with a
welcoming speech.

What (item listing):  Construction of primary school in San Juan Honduras
Who was it distributed to:
Chiquita Community of San Juan
Total Expenditure:
$20,000

The local government needed assistance to complete the construction of the San Juan school in Honduras.  The school was completed in February of 2003 and opened its doors to its 113 full time students.

IMPACT

Over 300 students utilize the schools that We Care helped build.  These students now have a safe and clean environment to receive their early and formative years of education.  The organizations investment signals the commitment and importance of education in the area further strengthening the community.

Thank you for caring and making this work possible...
